Faith Flourishes in Antioch: A Journey of Evangelization and the Fulfillment of God’s Law

June 12, 2025 | Catholic Reflections

In today’s liturgical readings, the Church draws us into the vibrant early days of Christianity in Antioch and reminds us of the enduring truth and relevance of God’s commandments through the teachings of Jesus.

First Reading: The Birthplace of “Christians”

(Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3)

The Acts of the Apostles recount a pivotal moment in the spread of the Christian faith. As the number of believers grew, news of this spiritual awakening reached the Church in Jerusalem. Barnabas was sent to Antioch to witness and guide the community. His heart, filled with joy at seeing God’s grace among them, led him to encourage perseverance in faith and devotion.

Described as “a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith,” Barnabas sought out Saul (later known as Paul) in Tarsus. Together, they labored in Antioch for an entire year, nurturing the new believers. It was here, in this thriving mission field, that the disciples were first called Christians—a name that would shape religious identity for centuries to come.

This flourishing community also became a launching point for missionary work. Prophets and teachers such as Barnabas, Symeon, Lucius, Manaen, and Saul received divine instruction during a time of worship and fasting. The Holy Spirit called them to set apart Barnabas and Saul for a new mission, which the community affirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands.

Responsorial Psalm: A Song of Divine Victory

(Psalm 98)

The psalmist leads us in a resounding proclamation:
“The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.”

This song of praise celebrates God’s wondrous deeds and his unwavering faithfulness to Israel. With vivid imagery of harps, trumpets, and joyful songs, the psalm invites all the earth to recognize and rejoice in God’s justice and salvation.

Alleluia Acclamation

(Psalm 25:4b, 5a)

Before the Gospel, we echo a heartfelt prayer:
“Teach me your paths, my God, and guide me in your truth.”
This plea prepares us to receive Christ’s teachings with openness and sincerity.

Gospel: Christ, the Fulfillment of the Law

(Matthew 5:17-19)

In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus delivers a profound declaration:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.”

Christ reaffirms the sacredness of the commandments, emphasizing their eternal validity. His mission is not to discard the old covenant but to bring it to completion in divine love and truth. Jesus warns against leading others astray through disobedience and elevates those who faithfully teach and live according to God’s commandments. They, He says, will be called greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Reflection and Insight

Today’s readings offer a compelling narrative of growth, obedience, and purpose. From the humble beginnings in Antioch to the profound words of Christ on the mount, we are reminded of the unbreakable link between God’s law and the mission of His people.

As modern-day disciples, we are called to emulate the faith and boldness of Barnabas and Saul—encouraging others, teaching the truth, and remaining rooted in the commandments. The message is clear: in both proclamation and practice, the Lord continues to reveal His saving power to all nations.

Let us rejoice in this truth and recommit ourselves to the path He sets before us.
